Nerd News: Peritonsillar abscess requiring ICU admission from Group C & G Strep

Really interesting case report that makes me very nervous about all the pharyngitis I've seen and sent home with supportive care over the last week. (With cultures, too, though.)

I read the chronology at the PCP's office and winced at the advice to "put an ice pack" on the neck swelling. Really? Even if you miss an abscess? ICE PACK?

  1. Reminds me of a call a few months ago while on call, asking "how much tylenol can I take?", but noting the VERY odd sounding voice I actually did the unthinkable: a house call, and was met by the person holding a towel to their mouth because they couldn't swallow their spit due to the abscess.
    How much tylenol????
